What does Buena Vista have in common with Moab, Durango, Summit County and Vail? Among other things, all these locations play host to an event in the 2008 Adventure Xstream Adventure Race Series. That BV found its way onto this short list of outdoor adventure destinations is testament to the outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities available here. On May 10, for the second year running, the Buena Vista adventure race will include whitewater kayaking, single track mountain biking, trekking, an orienteering course and a ropes course involving a 250+ foot Tyrolean traverse.
Last year over 250 competitors ranging from elite to amateur participated in the Buena Vista adventure race. Three distances will be available to competitors. The Sprint course will be 25-35 miles long and the 12 hour course 60 miles in length. This year a 24 hour course will also be available for the first time. Teams in this discipline will start at midnight on Friday and navigate a grueling 100 mile course. Athletes will have the option to race solo, or in teams of two or four.
Cash is at stake in the event for 4 person coed teams taking on the 24 hour course. First place will be awarded $1000, second $800 and first $600. The Buena Vista 24 hour adventure race is also part of the Adventure Xstream point series. Teams can garner points here in BV to add to their results from other events in the series. First prize in the series is $4000, second $3000 and third $2000. Finally, the Buena Vista 24 hour race is part of the Checkpoint Tracker Series which offers a first prize of $5000.
So as teams like Team Solomon/Crested Butte, Team 4 Corners AR, Team Boulder Performance Network and Team Nike arrive in Buena Vista, there will be more than bragging rights on the line. Come out and witness some of the world’s most hardcore endurance athletes at their peak. Or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, registration is now open but is 90% full. More information can be found HERE.
You can also follow the event online at checkpointtracker.com.
